The Old and The New

The Old and The New is a collection of traditional-style compositions and established Northumbrian tunes brought together by fiddler, mandolinist and composer Robin Dunn. Well known on the traditional music scene in north-east England, Robin has selected what he considers some of his best compositions and carefully matched them in sets with older tunes from the local tradition that have influenced and inspired his playing.

The collection was produced in response to repeated requests for the written music for tunes heard at performances by Robin's band, La Toque Bleu. It includes all the material from the album The Rocking Horse, together with a wider selection of tunes Robin was playing before he began composing his own music.

Rather than separating his compositions from the traditional repertoire, Robin combines old and new tunes into playable sets. This gives the collection a strong connection with the way the music is actually performed, while showing how newly composed tunes can sit naturally alongside established traditional material.

In addition to the tunes, the book includes several dances together with notes and comments from Robin. Among the repertoire are two sought-after compositions by Willie Taylor, The Pearl Wedding and Nancy Taylor's Reel, both widely played in sessions in Northumberland and elsewhere in England.
