Scottish Airs for Pairs is the third book in the Airs for Pairs series and the first to concentrate entirely on the traditional music of a single country. Drawing on centuries of Scottish music, the collection brings together well-known melodies with some less familiar gems, arranged for two players.

Alongside the traditional repertoire are two modern compositions by Brian McNeill and Martin Marroni, included with the composers' permission. The collection also features arrangements by Nathaniel Gow and William C. Honeyman, providing interesting examples of previously published Scottish duets.

The harmony parts have been written to enhance and support the melody rather than overpower it. An effective approach is often to play the tune alone or in unison first before introducing the harmony, allowing the character of the original melody to remain at the heart of the performance.

As many older Scottish tunes exist in numerous versions, the harmonies in this collection have been written specifically for the versions presented in the book and may not necessarily fit alternative settings. Suggested bowings are included as a useful guide for less experienced players, while more experienced musicians can adapt them to suit their own playing style.

Ornamentation, an important part of Scottish traditional music, has deliberately been left largely to the player, providing plenty of scope for individual interpretation and spontaneous expression.
