Nick Barbers English Selection

Nick Barber's English Selection is a collection of traditional tunes compiled for musicians who are already comfortable with their instrument but would like some help becoming involved in the English folk session scene. It follows on from the earlier Mally publication Nick Barber's English Choice.

A folk music session can be thought of as a musical conversation, and taking part becomes much easier when players have a shared repertoire. This collection aims to provide that common ground, bringing together tunes that musicians are likely to encounter at English sessions and offering a practical source for learning them.

The selection concentrates on tunes that have already stood the test of time rather than simply reflecting short-lived changes in session repertoire. They provide useful material both for musicians wanting to join in with familiar tunes and for players looking for suitable tunes with which to start a set that others are likely to recognise.

Where possible, the sources of the tunes are noted, encouraging players to explore their origins further through manuscripts, published collections, recordings and other musicians. This reflects the idea that traditional tunes have their own histories, shaped by the many musicians who have played and passed them on.

Although the collection is centred on the English session repertoire, it also includes a small number of tunes of French and Danish origin that have become established among English session players and are commonly played in an English style.
