English Pub Session Tunes
English Pub Session Tunes, compiled by Dave Mallinson, brings together 101 traditional tunes selected from the repertoire commonly played in English pub sessions, folk festivals, country dances, ceilidhs, barn dances and other traditional music settings.
The collection forms part of Dave Mallinson's series of session tune books and is designed to provide musicians with a practical repertoire they can actually use when playing with others. The tunes are presented in progressive order of difficulty, allowing players to develop their repertoire as their confidence and ability increase.
All 101 tunes use a range of just 14 notes, making the collection suitable for a wide variety of traditional melody instruments. The range fits comfortably within instruments such as fiddle, wooden flute and tin whistle, while also being particularly suitable for the D/G melodeon.
Music is presented in treble clef with chord symbols. The suggested chords provide a useful accompaniment but are not intended to be prescriptive, allowing musicians to adapt the arrangements to suit their own playing style or session.
Although the book focuses on music heard in English pub sessions, the tunes themselves are not exclusively English. The repertoire reflects the mixture typically encountered at sessions and includes melodies originating from England and other traditional music cultures.
A separately available accompaniment CD features the tunes from the book and can be used for listening and practice. The CD is not included with this book.
