Bone of Contention for Trombone Bass Clef by Derek Bourgeois is a collection of 15 studies for trombone in bass clef, designed for players at a medium to difficult level. These imaginative unaccompanied studies combine technical challenges with musical expression, providing valuable material for developing players looking to extend their abilities.

Rather than focusing solely on conventional technical exercises, Derek Bourgeois explores a wide range of musical challenges, including intervals, irregular time signatures, contrasting phrase lengths, varied articulations and dynamics, and extended slide positions. Each study encourages players to develop greater control, flexibility and musical understanding while tackling the distinctive demands of the trombone.
