Band Time, by Pete Mac, is a practical collection of folk dance tunes designed for musicians playing together in bands, workshops and dance settings. A sequel to Band Swing, it presents the music in a clear, straightforward format with phrasing intended to help both callers and dancers.
The book is arranged into sections including reels, polkas, jigs, hornpipes and waltzes, with tunes laid out so that related music can be played conveniently down the page. Chords are provided throughout for accompanists, making the collection suitable for guitarists, pianists, accordionists and other chordal players as well as melody instruments.
A particularly useful feature of Band Time is the inclusion of easier arrangements for selected tunes. These are printed opposite the full versions, allowing less experienced musicians to play alongside more advanced members of the band at the same tempo. Players can begin together with the simpler arrangement before the more experienced musicians move to the full version, enabling musicians of different abilities to participate in the same performance.
The collection has been developed from Pete Mac's extensive experience of leading folk dance bands and music workshops. A piano accordion player who also plays melodeon and English concertina, Pete has many years of practical experience providing music for folk and barn dancing.
The book also includes material suitable for particular dance situations, including the American-style reels Dick's Farewell and Crocker's Reel, which can be used together when providing music for square dances.
